Biography

Meredith A. Twardowski has been performing the flute for over three and a half decades.  During this time she has played professionally in several retirement communities, houses of worship, fife and drum corps, weddings, banquets and formal parties.  At retirement communities, Meredith has presented many unique hour long recitals with spoken information about music history or flute mechanics.  These well received programs have been shared many times at facilities such as Juniper Village in Bensalem, PA and Lutheran Manor in Bethlehem, PA.  Meredith also very much enjoys teaching private flute lessons to both adults and children and has six years of child care experience as a music educator.  Meredith currently performs with the Mercer County Symphonic Band and lives with her husband, Tom, in Lower Bucks County.

The Benefits of Solo Flute

The flute, without accompaniment, has many therapeutic and listening benefits.  When played alone, the flute provides a simple listening environment without the extra input of multiple instruments.  This musical experience can be particularly calm and meditative for the audience.

Solo flute allows a musician to add impromptu changes of tempo, or to slightly lengthen or shorten the notes of a musical phrase as the music is played.  This technique, known as rubato, keeps the music fresh and interesting for both the audience and the performer.

A logistical reason for hiring just one musician is that a solo musician’s schedule is easier to coordinate than the busy schedules of multiple musicians. This permits the venue’s staff to hire the flautist closer to the needs of their performance schedule.

The solo aspect of the concert encourages listeners to use both imagination and memory, two skills which keeps any mind active.  A resident at a retirement community, a fellow musician and audience member, commented after the performance that he could remember the accompaniment music as the melody lines of the pieces were being played.  Another resident also joyfully talked about her daughter, who was an accomplished flautist.

Solo flute has a wide array of benefits that enrich the performance and audience response to the music.
